HubPages: Beginners Guide (Basics)

  • Firstly, Congratulations on making it to the first step towards your passion - writing for getting noticed and writing for money. Welcome to HubPages.
  • Please carry a notepad & a pen wherever you go. You often get the best ideas when you're least aware of!
  • Read more often - Reading helps in good sentence structure and positively affects the fluidity of your writing. Also browse through your favorite topics and study the latest trends.
  • Play word power games to sharpen your vocabulary. Challenge someone at scrabble or crossword.
  • Get your friends and family to read your hubs. Coax them, bribe them, but get them to read...any kind of encouragement especially at the beginning helps to write more. Sometimes you'll be surprised at what ideas they could give you!
  • Know a friend or a teacher who is good at something you're writing? Go ahead and ask them for advice. Do your research on a topic based on the experiences of real people, carry your camera wherever you go, and take snippets for your journal. Also, good quality pictures on hubs often are visually pleasing and could attract more willing readers.
  • Try adding some humour to your writing to make it more personalized, of course on relevant topics. A good laugh for the reader means you've done a good job at making someone happy!
  • Don't feel shy to write anything in your notepad. Even the most unappealing ideas of today could spring new inspiration for you a few weeks down the line.
  • Highlight anything from your day to day activities. You never know what inspires you enough to write. The mind is very powerful in 'back-linking' images, experiences, moments and all sorts of topics. Follow your mind map closely and jot down important notes as and when they happen.
  • Study the top hubbers. Study even new hubbers and how they're constructing their HubPage portfolio...if nothing else, it could give you some inspiration.
  • Don't hesitate to ask for advice. Different hubbers have different viewpoints on how to succeed. See example of the best advice given by top hubbers.
  • Be both consistent and persistent. You're a few weeks/ months old and are probably 'satisfied' with your scores and allocades and you've reached a point where you cant think of anything to write on. Don't give it up yet - take a scheduled break if you want but come back later!
  • Love the money? Work hard on affiliate marketing and broadcasting your work on social websites. But be realistic, making money through your writing on HubPages takes time.
  • Be easy on yourself. At times your scores will drop; or the viewership may go down or you may even get emails suggesting that you've got duplicate content on your hub etc. Don't get disheartened yet. HubPages gives you the opportunity to fix all this and you may even find some inspiration at such pressing moments!
  • Socialize often. Everyone on HubPage wants to get noticed. Do some Hub Hopping and be generous about leaving useful comments.
  • All excited and working too hard? Go get some sleep! Remember, a tired mind is like a furnace for bright and creative ideas.
  • Lastly, but most importantly, pay attention to the needs of your family and friends. They are your strength and should not be ignored. Give them undivided attention whenever you're with them and you'll never feel guilty of writing at the cost of a relationship.

Great advice Cloudy-Cool. I have been on here for nine months now. At the beginning I just wanted to write and I had so much to 'tell'. Now however as well as carrying on writing in my usual style I would like to branch out and hopefully earn a little money doing something that I love.

Therefore this hub is ideal and I am bookmarking it for easy future reference.

Thank you so much for sharing and take care Cloudy-cool.
